Lexical tectonics: Mapping structural change in patterns of lexification
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract Whether it is based on philological data or reconstruction, historical linguistics formulates etymological hypotheses that entail changes both in form and meaning. Semantic change can be understood as a “patterns of lexification”, i. e., correspondences between forms senses. Thus polysemous word, which once lexified senses s1–s2–s3, evolves so later encodes s2–s3–s4. Meanings used to colexified are now dislexified, vice versa. Leaning empirical from Romance Oceanic, this study outlines general model lexicology, identifies five types structural innovations the lexicon: split, merger, competition, shift, relexification. The theoretical discussion made easier by using visual approach change, diachronic maps. maps have already proven useful represent synchronic patterns lexification, outlining each language’s emic categories against grid etic same principle profitably when analysing lexification diachrony: lexical then viewed reconfiguration sense clusters semantic space. Maps help us visualize “lexical tectonics” at play words evolve over time, gradually shifting their meaning, gaining losing territory, colliding with other, disappearing forever.

Geomorphic and structural assessment of active tectonics in NW Alborz
Alborz Mountains is a region of active deformation within Arabia-Eurasia collision zone. The study fault system in western Alborz comprises abundant evidence of active faulting accompanied by occurrence of historical earthquakes. Active tectonics of Manjil-Rudbar fault zone whose movement caused destructive 1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake was concentrated in this article through geomorphic and st...
متن کاملStructural Methods For Lexical/Semantic Patterns
This paper represents initial work on corpus methods for acquiring lexical/semantic pattern lexicons for text understanding. Recently, implementors of information extraction (IE) systems have moved away from using conventional syntactic parsing methods, instead adopting a variety of pattern based approaches for complex IE tasks. While there has been much work towards automated acquisition of le...
متن کاملOn the Problem of Lexical Semantic Change
The article provides an insight into a problem of lexical semantic change. A short historical outline of the development of semantic studies is given. The authors analyze some of the most important stages in the history of the formation of this field. The existing approaches to dealing with form and meaning, namely semasiological and onomasiological ones are discussed. The authors consider the ...
